UN High Commissioner Volker Turk stated July 3 that a human rights catastrophe is unfolding in al-Obeid, Sudan. Civilians there have faced siege-like conditions for 18 months amid drone strikes and fighting between Sudanese forces.
Al JazeeraUnited Nations human rights chief Volker Turk said July 3 that a human rights catastrophe is unfolding in the Sudanese city of al-Obeid in North Kordofan. He made the statement during an urgent debate at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that Britain had requested. Turk told delegates that civilians in al-Obeid have lived under siege-like conditions for 18 months.
Clean water supplies have reached a critical point amid repeated drone strikes, he said. The UN human rights office recorded at least 45 civilians killed and 41 injured in 15 drone strikes in al-Obeid and surrounding areas between June 6 and June 28.
Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and allied fighters are massing around al-Obeid, while Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF fight for control of areas surrounding the city.
Britain's envoy had earlier warned of the risk of large-scale atrocities. "The signs from al-Obeid are clear and unmistakable: Another human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan, this time in the capital of the strategic state of North Kordofan," Turk said.
