United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told delegates on July 6, 2026, that artificial intelligence is being deployed faster than anyone, including its developers, can keep up. He spoke at the opening of the first-ever UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, a two-day meeting in Geneva.
“A technology that can reshape economies, transform the world of work, sway elections and tilt the balance of security is being deployed faster than anyone — including the people building it — can keep up,” Guterres said.
He added that innovation requires guardrails and that powerful AI must be governed. Rappler reported that Guterres urged globally harmonized rules to reduce potential risks, particularly to children. The dialogue is not intended to produce a treaty but to discuss ways to limit harms while capturing opportunities.
Delegates will review findings from a UN-backed independent scientific panel of 40 experts conducting the first global assessment of AI. A fuller report from the panel is scheduled for next year, together with a second global meeting in New York.
