Images of the Confederate flag appeared on multiple screens in the North Carolina booth at the Great American State Fair on Friday and were removed the same day by event organizers. , and is scheduled to continue through July 10. The booth was organized by private sponsors after North Carolina opted out of official participation.
A source familiar with the planning told NBC News that the video display was not included in the initial design renderings submitted to Freedom 250, the Trump administration-aligned public-private partnership hosting the event. Organizers removed the display quickly on Friday, and as of Monday morning only the North Carolina state flag remained visible. Mt.
Olive Pickle Company, a North Carolina-based sponsor, announced on Friday that it was withdrawing participation after learning of the display. A spokesperson for North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein said in a statement, “This flag does not represent the North Carolina that we love.
America 250 is about unity and bringing our nation together. ” A Freedom 250 spokesperson stated that states decide what displays appear in their booths. North Carolina was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
The fair has drawn low turnout since its launch. A Ferris wheel broke down during the event, and portions closed early over the weekend of June 27–28 due to inclement weather. Several musical guests, including Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, Martina McBride, The Commodores and Bret Michaels, withdrew from scheduled performances before the fair opened.
