United States to Face Canada in Ice Hockey World Championship Quarterfinal

The United States defeated Austria 4-1 on Tuesday at the ice hockey world championship in Zurich, advancing to a quarterfinal against Canada. Connor Clifton scored 5:34 into the game. Ryan Ufko added a goal 45 seconds later. Paul Cotter made the score 3-0 early in the second period, and Matthew Tkachuk scored on the power play at 31:52.

Will Borgen recorded two assists. Devin Cooley stopped 25 shots. Simeon Schwinger scored Austria's lone goal.

The United States and Canada played for the gold medal at the Milan Cortina Olympics in February. The United States won that game 2-1 in overtime. S. player Ryan Ufko said after the Austria game that the team looked forward to facing Canada on Thursday.

Canada defeated Czechia 3-2 to finish the preliminary stage with seven wins. Macklin Celebrini scored twice, and John Tavares scored the game-winning goal in the third period. Sidney Crosby and Parker Wotherspoon each had two assists. Canada topped Group B with 20 points.

Switzerland completed its preliminary schedule with a 4-2 win over Finland. Ken Jager scored twice for the Swiss, who finished first in Group A with 21 points.
