University of Chicago Law School Bans Electronic Devices in First-Year Classes

The University of Chicago Law School will ban electronic devices in all first-year classes beginning with the next academic term. Officials described the change as part of a broader review of how legal education should adapt to widespread AI use. The new rule applies to laptops, tablets, and phones during scheduled class sessions.

Students may still use devices outside the classroom and in upper-level courses.

School officials stated that the restriction is intended to encourage direct classroom engagement and handwritten notes. They added that these practices help students build analytical and interpersonal abilities that AI systems do not replicate. The measure follows internal discussions about the role of technology in legal training.

No changes were announced for faculty use of devices or for research and administrative functions. The policy takes effect at the start of the upcoming fall semester and will be reviewed after one year.
