Urban Art Biennale 2026 Opens at UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte
Dozens of artists from 17 countries have installed works across the preserved 6-hectare former ironworks near the French border in Germany. The biennial event features site-specific pieces that engage with the industrial site's history of decay and labor. Organizers emphasize original, non-commercial creations tailored to the location.

This year's show features 50 artists whose works engage directly with the sprawling industrial complex that has stood silent for decades.
The ironworks spreads over a 6-hectare site, nearly 15 acres, dominating the town of Völklingen near Germany’s border with France.
The Völklinger Hütte ironworks have been on UNESCO’s world heritage list since 1994, recognized as the only intact example in western Europe and North America of an integrated ironworks built and equipped in the 19th and 20th centuries. Production at the Völklinger Hütte ironworks ended in 1986 and the furnaces have been cold since then. No new installations were added after the mid-1930s.
The site is open to the public as a museum. Ralf Beil, general director of the Völklinger Hütte site, said the location occupies a central place in the history of street art. “This location is at the core of street art and graffiti art.
It all began in industrial places like this,” Beil stated. ” The Urban Art Biennale has grown into a biennial tradition over the past decade and a half. Organizers “want pieces which are really original for this space and this also is then prohibiting (them) from being commercial,” Beil said.
“This is an installation for the space. ” France-based artist Tomas Lacque created an installation featuring a small van, a pile of tires, toys and debris covered in a coat of paint. Standing in a hall where furnaces once worked, the piece evokes fossil-fueled mobility buried under ash.
Spanish artist Ampparito painted the words “no hay nada de valor” in huge white letters on the roof of one of the site's massive sheds. Ampparito's work is best seen from a viewing platform 45 meters above ground level. Dutch artist Boris Tellegen, better known as Delta, contributed a massive green-and-black wooden sculpture that lights up the interior of the ironworks.
French-based collective Vortex-X, which recycles salvaged material, created a work titled “Memory in transit” by stretching rays of white industrial fabric across one of the building's halls. British artist Remi Rough contributed small paintings to the Urban Art Biennale 2026. “It’s so dusty and it’s so old, but it’s beautiful, you know, there’s beauty in decay,” Rough said.
Danish artist Anders Reventlov said he felt humble to participate. “As somebody told me ... it was hell to work here,” Reventlov stated. “Now it’s not hell. ” The Biennale opens Saturday and runs until Nov.
