US Reviews Position on UK's Falkland Islands Claim

Among the options under consideration are suspending Spain from NATO and reassessing the US position on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands. The email argues that suspending Spain would have limited operational impact but significant symbolic value, aiming to decrease a sense of entitlement among European allies, the official said.

Spain's Socialist leadership has stated it will not allow its bases or airspace to be used for attacks on Iran. The United States maintains two military bases in Spain: Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base. Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, responding to the report, said Spain works off official documents and government positions, not emails.

The US-Israeli war with Iran began with an air campaign on February 28, 2026, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping. President Trump has criticized NATO allies for not deploying navies to secure the strait. Allies like Britain and France have indicated they would help keep the strait open after a ceasefire but view joining the current blockade as entering the war.
