USFK Commander Stresses East-Up Mapping for Indo-Pacific Strategy

The commander of U.S. Forces Korea has stressed the importance of an east-up perspective in the Indo-Pacific theater and a coherent strategic geometry linking South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. The remarks, reported on the USFK website, were made at a symposium held at the U.S. Army War College on Tuesday U.S. time.

They come as Washington seeks to modernize its alliance with South Korea, expanding the role of the 28,500 troops stationed there beyond defense of the Korean Peninsula while encouraging Seoul to assume a greater share of its own security costs. In the speech the commander raised the need to set aside the conventional north-up view of the world map and instead consider an east-up perspective.

The concept was first introduced by the commander in a USFK article published in November 2025. "In Korea, we have that presence. We aren't projecting power. Our alliance is our power," the commander was quoted as saying. Unlike traditional mapping that places North Korea and Russia to the north of South Korea, the east-up orientation visually highlights areas south of the peninsula, including Taiwan and the Philippines.

Rotating the map in this way shows the Pacific not as an empty space to be crossed but as a coherent strategic geometry anchored by U.S. and allied positions in South Korea, Japan and the Philippines, according to the website. The commander also underscored the importance of land power for its precision and persistence.

This contrasts with air power, which can strike targets across vast distances but cannot occupy ground or sustain partnerships. "The soldier always stays," the commander said.
