Utah Court Allows Cameras in Tyler Robinson Murder Hearing as He Appeals Ruling

Tyler Robinson, 23, asked a Utah court to pause his murder case while he appeals a ruling that permits the press to film and photograph him during hearings, according to new court documents reported by the New York Post. Robinson stated that it would not be fair for a multi-day hearing scheduled next month to proceed with news cameras present before an appeals court decides whether to exclude the media.

He has sought from the outset of the case to restrict media access, including requests to seal certain hearings, papers, and evidence.

Robinson has claimed that images of him in court endanger his right to a fair trial and that news coverage has villainized him in ways that could prejudice potential jurors. He faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted. Erica Kirk, widow of the victim, has been granted victim representative rights in the case and has pushed for maximum public access to the proceedings.

Robinson is accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10 while Kirk was speaking to a crowd of thousands at Utah Valley University in Orem.
