Utah Judge Orders Public Preliminary Hearing in Charlie Kirk Shooting Case
A Utah judge ruled Monday that the July preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson will be open to the public and media. The five-day hearing will include all evidence in the September 2025 shooting death of Charlie Kirk.

A Utah judge ruled Monday that all evidence in the Charlie Kirk assassination will be made public at a preliminary hearing next month. District Judge Tony Graf ordered the hearing open to reporters and members of the public. The preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson is scheduled for July and is expected to last five days.
Robinson, 23, is accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk during an appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem on Sept. 10. Prosecutors say Robinson confessed to the murder via text to his lover. Charlie Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA.
Robinson appeared during a hearing in Fourth District Court in Provo, Utah. Erika Kirk sought to keep the proceedings as open as possible. Robinson’s lawyers sought to bar news cameras from the five-day preliminary hearing set for July.
Judge Graf rejected the motion to bar news cameras. Robinson’s team claimed prosecutors have illegally sensationalized the case, pushed political agendas and villainized him in the eyes of the public, violating a pre-trial publicity order. Judge Graf did not find the Provo County District Attorney’s office in contempt of court on Monday.
Both sides will have the chance to present their arguments on June 12. Media will be allowed to film and live stream the July hearing. Judge Graf said several methods remain available to protect the defendant’s right to a fair trial, including enlarging the venire of potential jurors, utilizing detailed juror questionnaires, and conducting thorough voir dire.
