Utah Reports Measles Cases for a Full Year Across 22 Counties

Utah has recorded measles cases continuously for one year, with more than 680 infections reported since the first outbreak began on June 20, 2025. The virus has reached 22 of the state's 29 counties and has proven difficult to contain to a single region.
Statewide, 12.8 percent of kindergarteners lacked measles vaccination during the most recent school year, below the 95 percent threshold needed to prevent sustained transmission. The TriCounty health region in the rural northeast recorded the second-largest drop in childhood vaccination rates, with more than 16 percent of kindergarteners missing the vaccine.
The southwestern part of the state has recorded the highest number of cases, with 265 infections since last summer. An exposure at a state high school wrestling championship in February led to at least 46 additional cases. Health officials responded by excluding unvaccinated students from in-person classes and directing sick individuals to isolate.
Officials reported that community outreach increased vaccination uptake in affected areas.
Public health officials consider measles eliminated from a country when continuous local transmission stops for at least one year. International experts will review U.S. and Mexican elimination status in November. State epidemiologists stated that transmission continues and expressed concern that school reopenings and colder weather could increase cases again in the fall.
The national measles case count reached 2,104 as of June 18.
