9 million acres in southern Utah. It includes red rock formations, archaeological sites, and habitat for bighorn sheep. Autumn Gillard, a southern Paiute woman, said sacred sites within the monument were at risk from prior proposals that would have opened areas to development.
Officials reviewed a request to rescind the current management plan but took no action to change it. Inside Climate News reported that the plan remains in place. The monument was designated in 1996. Its boundaries were reduced in 2017 before being restored in 2021.
