Utz Recalls Specific Zapp's and Dirty Brand Potato Chips Over Salmonella Risk

Utz is voluntarily recalling certain flavors and sizes of Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips sold nationwide. The recall stems from a seasoning that contains dry milk powder which could be contaminated with salmonella. The company was notified of the potential issue after the powder supplier initiated a separate recall.

The milk powder was sourced from California Dairies and supplied by a third party. Seasoning batches tested negative for salmonella before use in the chips. Utz proceeded with the recall as a precaution even though no illnesses have been linked to the products. Publix posted its own recall notice on May 4 for four potato chip items sold in its stores.

Nine products are included, all with best-by dates in July or August 2026 and specific batch codes. Zapp's items cover Bayou Blackened Ranch in 1.5-ounce, 2.5-ounce, and 8-ounce bags, Salt and Vinegar in 1.5-ounce bags, and Big Cheezy in 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce bags.

Dirty brand items are limited to 2-ounce bags of Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion. Full UPC codes and batch details are available on the FDA website.

Anyone who bought the recalled chips should not eat them and should discard or return the products. Consumers can contact Utz customer care by email or phone at 1-877-423-0149 for refunds. Salmonella symptoms usually appear between eight and 72 hours after exposure and include stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, and headache.

Most infections resolve without treatment, though severe cases may require medical care.
