Valve Allows SteamOS Installation on Any PC Hardware With 3.8 Release
SteamOS 3.8.10 launched last week with expanded hardware compatibility. Valve employee Pierre-Loup Griffais said Nvidia driver support is under development but may arrive after 2026.

Valve said users can install SteamOS on any PC hardware they choose starting with the SteamOS 3.8 release. 10 shipped the week before June 22, 2026, and added improved compatibility with recent Intel and AMD platforms. Valve employee Pierre-Loup Griffais said the company is collaborating with Nvidia on driver support and has assembled a growing team for the effort.
He noted that full Nvidia support might not arrive in 2026, though work continues in the background. Griffais said the current version already delivers a good experience on console-like setups that connect a single hard drive to a television. He added that SteamOS still lacks HDMI-CEC support.
The installation process remains designed for placing a fresh copy of the operating system on a new PC. Users who want to install SteamOS on an existing drive must wipe it first, and no dual-boot wizard is available yet. Previously, desktop installations were largely limited to AMD systems and required a Steam Deck recovery image.
