Valve Announces Steam Machine Prices of $1,049 and $1,349 Without Controllers

Valve announced prices of $1,049 for the 512GB Steam Machine and $1,349 for the 2TB version. Controllers are not included. The Verge reported that Valve is not subsidizing the hardware. The company cited ongoing component shortages that forced it to raise prices from earlier targets.

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said memory suppliers provide a monthly price and quantity limit with no contracts. He stated that declining an offer ends further discussions with that supplier. Steam Machines will ship with either one 16GB RAM stick or two 8GB sticks depending on available supply.

Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said company tests found no measurable performance difference in games between the two configurations. The Verge noted that recent Steam Deck OLED price increases of $240 for the 512GB model and $300 for the 1TB model suggest original Steam Machine targets near $809 and $1,049. Suppliers mentioned include Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix.

Apple CEO Tim Cook separately warned of price hikes for iPhones, Macs, and other devices due to the same component shortages.
