Those prices exceed the PS5 at $599.99, the Xbox Series X at $649.99 and the PS5 Pro at $899.99. Valve said it is selling the Steam Machine at cost, equal to the price of components and assembly. Valve explained its decision not to subsidize the hardware.
“While this might seem like an easy solution, it doesn’t align with our beliefs about how healthy ecosystems are built,” the company stated. It added that open systems drive long-term innovation and that customers should be free to choose among devices without being locked into one maker’s hardware. Valve first announced the Steam Machine late last year and had planned an early 2026 launch.
Component shortages delayed the release. The company now expects to produce roughly two-thirds of its original target quantity.
