Van Jones Urges Democrats to Reject DSA Positions on Hamas and Policing After Socialist Candidates Win Primaries

CNN political commentator Van Jones criticized Democratic Socialist of America activists Saturday for advancing positions on Hamas, policing, prisons and immigration that he described as outside progressive ideals. Fox News reported that Jones posted on X a statement referencing his Substack post in which he urged the Democratic Party to reject such views.
"Yes, we want our Democratic Party to be a big tent.
But we don’t need 'party poopers. So STOP pooping in the punch bowl — and telling us the turds are ice cubes," Jones wrote on X. He added that supporting Hamas, calling for no police, no prisons and no borders, or celebrating the murder of Israeli civilians does not qualify as progressive.
Jones described himself as a strong Democrat rooted in policies including criminal justice reform, the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, free education, and clean air and water. He rejected the notion that far-left positions equate to Nordic-style social democracy, asking what universal healthcare has to do with Hamas or abolishing law enforcement.
The DSA's Workers Deserve More program calls for shifting police funding toward public services as a step toward abolishing police and prisons, ending Immigration and Customs Enforcement, legalizing migration and granting amnesty regardless of status.
Its foreign policy section seeks an end to all U.S. military and economic assistance to Israel and the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Jones issued the comments after Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated 15-term Rep.
Diana DeGette in Colorado's Democratic primary. In New York, DSA-backed candidates Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier won congressional primaries, and several other endorsed candidates secured state legislative nominations. In an earlier Substack post, Jones noted that the DSA's electoral successes were sending waves of joy and terror through the Democratic Party.
