Vanguard, the first new open-ocean ambient-pressure subsea research habitat built in over forty years, was deployed at Tennessee Reef off the coast of the Florida Keys, @NewScientist reported. The habitat includes an integrated moon pool that allows researchers to enter and exit the water directly.
Scientists can conduct daily dives lasting six to eight hours and process samples inside the structure without returning them to the surface.
Vanguard is designed for marine science and coral restoration work. It is also positioned as a space analog for elite team training. @NewScientist reported that the deployment marks a return to sustained underwater habitation after a gap of more than four decades.
