Vatican Excommunicates Breakaway Catholic Group Over Bishop Ordinations
The Vatican has told the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X that ordaining bishops without papal approval in July would constitute a schismatic act and result in automatic excommunication. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, head of the Vatican's disciplinary office, reiterated the warning in an official statement.
NewsweekThe Vatican warned on Wednesday that members of the ultra-traditionalist Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X face excommunication if they proceed with plans to ordain new bishops without papal approval. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, the Vatican's head of discipline, stated that the ordinations scheduled for July would constitute a schismatic act and a grave offense against God.
The warning was issued in response to the group's February announcement that it would move forward without the required pontifical mandate. “I reiterate what has already been communicated,” Fernández said in a Vatican press release. “The episcopal ordinations announced by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X do not have the corresponding pontifical mandate.
'” The release added that the Pope wished to explicitly confirm his desire to continue praying that this new schismatic act may be avoided.
The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X was founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in opposition to many of the reforms that followed the Second Vatican Council. These included changes to the Mass, ecumenism, and the Church’s relationship with the modern world.
The society is dedicated to the old Latin Mass and tends to oppose liberal theology while embracing conservative teachings. In 1988, members involved with consecrating four bishops without papal approval were excommunicated. Subsequent popes attempted to ease tensions, with one lifting the excommunications in 2009 and another granting the group's priests the right to validly hear confessions and witness marriages under certain conditions.
The latest warning comes as the group prepares to ordain bishops independently. Vatican officials described the planned ceremony as creating a formal rupture with the papacy. The statement emphasized the seriousness of the potential breach. It follows years of dialogue aimed at reconciliation that have so far failed to resolve core disagreements over authority and liturgical practice.
““The Pope wished to explicitly confirm his desire to continue praying that this new schismatic act may be avoided.””
This is a developing story.
