Venezuela Declares Emergency After Earthquakes Kill 164

Venezuela declared a state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday collapsed buildings in multiple cities, including the capital Caracas. At least 164 people were killed and close to 1,000 were wounded. The United States said it is in touch with Venezuelan authorities and is mobilizing assistance for the country.

Officials stated that search and rescue teams, medical supplies, and humanitarian resources are being sent in the first days after the disaster.

Financial sanctions remain in place on Venezuela despite some recent easing. Officials noted that such measures can complicate the transfer of funds by aid groups and create administrative delays for importing goods and personnel. A researcher at Finland's HUMLOG Institute said sanctions have already weakened Venezuela's domestic market for essential items.

The same researcher added that aid agencies may slow or halt deliveries to avoid violating restrictions.

The interim government has maintained stable relations with the United States since sanctions on certain individuals were lifted earlier this year. Officials said new licenses now allow some transactions with Venezuelan banks. The researcher warned that aid operations could be viewed as advancing political influence rather than remaining neutral.

Operating in areas with limited security may also require aid workers to coordinate with armed groups, which can compromise perceptions of impartiality.
