Twin earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, and authorities have raised the death toll to 3,889. Lawmaker Jorge Rodrigues stated on Thursday that at least 16,740 people had been injured and 17,907 displaced. The Pan American Health Organization warned that displaced people along Venezuela’s northern coast face increased risk of disease due to limited access to clean water and medical care.
PAHO director Jarbas Barbosa said the greatest health risks in coming weeks may stem from disruptions to health services, overcrowded conditions, deficiencies in water and sanitation, and reduced access to vaccination and routine healthcare. The United Nations launched an appeal for roughly $300 million to assist 1.3 million people in urgent need of aid.
PAHO urged immediate disbursement of the remaining $15 million in requested emergency aid to repair damaged hospitals and maintain basic sanitation in camps for the displaced.
The agency is working with Venezuela’s health ministry to improve vaccine access and trace any outbreaks of respiratory or digestive illnesses in shelters. Displaced residents set up an improvised camp in a baseball field in Catia La Mar on June 30.
