The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has started a decade-long project to map the southern sky using the largest digital camera built. Located in Chile, the telescope will capture hundreds of images nightly to study stars and galaxies. Data from the survey could offer insights into dark matter and dark energy.
gizmodo.comThe Vera C. Rubin Observatory has begun its 10-year survey of the southern sky. Perched on a Chilean mountaintop, the telescope will repeatedly image the same regions and capture hundreds of images each night to detect fainter objects.
The project will map billions of stars in the Milky Way and billions of galaxies beyond it. Researchers have tuned the equipment for the depth and accuracy required for the full survey. The observatory released its first images last year, including views of the Trifid and Lagoon nebulas located thousands of light-years from Earth.
A light-year equals nearly 6 trillion miles. The U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy fund the project. It is named after astronomer Vera Rubin, whose work provided early evidence for dark matter.
Phil Marshall, the observatory’s deputy director of operations, said the data will enable scientists worldwide to study the universe in new ways. The survey data may also provide information on dark matter and dark energy.
