The facility in Chile completed a year of testing and has started a decade-long effort to map the southern sky. It will generate 10 terabytes of data nightly and has already identified more than 11,000 new asteroids.
New ScientistThe Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile has begun the Legacy Survey of Space and Time after completing one year of testing and calibration. The project will run for 10 years and produce the most detailed record of the southern sky to date.
@NewScientist reported that the observatory will collect about 10 terabytes of data each night in the form of hundreds of high-resolution images. Each image covers an area roughly 40 times the size of the full moon, and the completed survey will cover nearly all of the sky visible from the southern hemisphere.
” The observatory is operated by NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory/NOIRLab/SLAC/AURA. The survey has already started issuing alerts for transient events such as supernovae and moving asteroids and comets. ” These alerts have led to the discovery of more than 11,000 new asteroids.
