Vice President Visits Maine To Highlight Anti-Fraud Task Force
The vice president traveled to Bangor, Maine on May 14, 2026 to speak at an event focused on government fraud prevention. Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling presented examples of improper payments uncovered by the Anti-Fraud Task Force. The visit occurred one day after a related White House press conference on the same subject.
foxnews.comThe vice president arrived in Bangor, Maine on Thursday for the first trip dedicated to the Anti-Fraud Task Force. The stop came roughly 24 hours after a White House press conference on the same topic. Administration officials said the event centered on protecting taxpayer dollars.
Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling addressed the crowd before the vice president spoke. Sonderling stated that since the task force began, officials uncovered nearly 29 billion dollars sent to the same Social Security numbers across multiple states.
He added that 139 million dollars had been sent to dead people. Attendees reacted with gasps and murmurs to the figures. One person asked aloud if the numbers were serious. The presentation described widespread fraud that the task force is now working to prevent.
" Audience members held similar signs and interacted with the speaker throughout the event. The vice president told the crowd that leadership in Washington should protect the taxes paid by people who work hard and follow the rules. Before the speech, the vice president was greeted on the tarmac by former Republican Maine Gov.
Paul LePage, who is running for Congress. The vice president praised LePage's record of protecting tax dollars, essential services and local law enforcement. The vice president urged Maine voters to support LePage's bid for federal office. The vice president also commented on Republican Maine Sen.
Susan Collins, who did not attend the rally in order to maintain her voting record in Washington. The vice president described Collins as independent in a way that fits the character of the state. Collins has at times opposed administration nominations.
The Anti-Fraud Task Force was created after an independent YouTuber named Nick Shirley helped expose an alleged fraud scandal involving Somali-run daycare centers in Minnesota. Trump administration officials told The Daily Caller on Wednesday that the task force had identified almost 6.3 billion dollars in government contracts received by possibly fraudulent entities.
Officials have begun sending letters to nearly 400 contracting businesses. The vice president said the approach to fighting fraud includes rejecting fraudsters, sending them to prison where possible and recovering funds in all cases. The vice president closed by attributing part of the fraud problem to the prior administration's immigration policies that allowed millions of illegal entries across the country, including into Maine.
The event carried a clear focus on the 2026 midterm elections.
One attendee shouted "2028" as the vice president took the stage. The vice president told the crowd that voters should send representatives, senators and governors to Washington who will fight fraud on their behalf. The administration has sought a unifying domestic message after challenges including the U.S.-Iran conflict and rising gas prices.
A previous domestic trip by the president in late April visited Las Vegas and Phoenix, where the "No Tax on Tips" policy was highlighted along with midterm themes.
