Victoria Regional Rail Services Remain Suspended After Telstra Outage

Victoria's regional rail network remains suspended after a nationwide telecommunications outage that began yesterday. V/Line has advised commuters not to use its services today if possible, citing ongoing safety concerns. The outage stemmed from a software defect that caused time synchronization issues across Telstra's network.

Telstra stated it identified and resolved the issue by 4pm yesterday, but V/Line services stayed suspended overnight. Replacement buses operated with very limited capacity last night. Passengers waited hours at stations, and the buses themselves were affected by the same telecommunications problems.

V/Line chief executive William Tieppo said the outage interfered with SIM cards used on each train to communicate with the wider network. He noted that V/Line migrated its essential train communication services to Telstra 4G in 2024 after the 3G shutdown.

"We acknowledge this has been inconvenient to many people and thank passengers for their patience as work continues to safely restore services," a V/Line spokesperson said. The Australian Rail Track Corporation advised V/Line that Telstra's ongoing telecommunications reliability issues mean it is not yet safe to resume train operations.

Tieppo said V/Line is in discussions with the Australian Rail Track Corporation about a longer-term backup system. He added that the backup system will be examined at a national level. Hai Vu, a transport engineering professor at Monash University, said issues are common when systems rely on legacy technology that receives incremental updates rather than full redesigns for resilience.

He noted that the regional network's wide geographic footprint adds maintenance challenges. The Victorian government committed $1.3 billion to improving the state's rail system in May's budget, including $318 million for maintenance and safety upgrades on regional lines.
