Video Shows Democratic Campaign Coaching Pennsylvania Candidate on Messaging
An unedited video posted by a Democratic campaign group shows Pennsylvania House candidate Bob Brooks receiving guidance from an off-screen staffer while speaking with Pete Buttigieg. The session, filmed by The Bench, includes prompts on emphasizing affordability and reaching voters who feel left behind by the party.
abcnews.go.comThe unclipped footage, first reported by Fox News, shows Brooks in conversation with Pete Buttigieg, who served as transportation secretary in the Biden administration. An off-screen staffer offers prompts as the two prepare for an interview intended to appear natural.
The staffer directed the pair to focus on specific themes. "Think about your audience," the staffer said. "Why is this race so important? We need to win the House [of Representatives] — all of that. Winning over people who feel like they’re left behind by the party, flipping the district.
" Buttigieg asked for clarification on the district number before the conversation began. The staffer also provided guidance on the use of beer cans placed as props. "We are going to have a really normal conversation with three cameras pointing at you," the staffer joked.
"Everybody act normal," Buttigieg responded.
The session highlights the group's efforts to stress affordability and appeal to a broad range of voters following the 2024 election. The Bench describes its ideal candidates as community-rooted, values-driven and ready to connect with voters across party lines.
Brooks has received support from the group as well as endorsements from several prominent Democrats. Brooks, a firefighter, faces a four-way primary next week for the chance to challenge the Republican incumbent in Pennsylvania's 7th District. The district is viewed as one of the most competitive in the country.
A nonpartisan political report rates the general election matchup as a toss-up.
The staffer told Brooks the interview would remain mostly hands-off. "Bob, feel free to prompt Pete with a question: Why this race, why here in the Lehigh Valley, and we will interject if needed to do a little directing, but we’re going to be mostly hands-off," the staffer said.
The video was produced as part of promotional material for The Bench, which also backs candidates in Texas, Michigan and Iowa. The Bench functions as an extension of the Democratic National Committee. Its support for Brooks includes highlighting his background and efforts to reach voters on issues such as affordability.
