A Pew Research Center poll of 5,103 U.S. adults conducted from April 20 to April 26 found that public views of five personal traits associated with the president have declined since November 2024. The largest decline occurred in the share of respondents who believe the president keeps his promises.
That figure fell from 51 percent shortly after the November 2024 election to 38 percent in the new survey. A majority of respondents still said the president stands up for what he believes in, though that share dropped from 68 percent in August 2025 to 64 percent.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.6 percentage points for the overall sample.
The president's job approval rating has registered net negative for more than a year. Aggregators reported the following averages as of May 6: 38 percent approve and 58 percent disapprove according to the New York Times; 39 percent approve and 57.6 percent disapprove according to the Silver Bulletin; and 40.3 percent approve and 56.8 percent disapprove according to RealClearPolitics.
The Pew survey itself placed approval at 34 percent, the lowest mark from that pollster during the current term. Other recent polls have shown disapproval ratings reaching record highs for this president. A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll conducted April 24-28 found 62 percent disapproval, the highest in that survey's history covering both terms.
That poll measured 37 percent approval among 2,560 adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points. An NPR/PBS News/Marist poll released May 6 reported 59 percent disapproval and 37 percent approval. Among those who disapproved, 51 percent did so strongly, tying the worst reading for this president in that pollster's data.
The survey included 1,322 respondents from April 27-30 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. The Pew poll was released on May 1.
