Dutch rider Demi Vollering claimed her first Giro d'Italia title on Sunday by overtaking Anna van der Breggen during the decisive ninth stage.
abcnews.go.comDemi Vollering won the Giro d'Italia on Sunday after dropping race leader Anna van der Breggen on the final climb and finishing 30 seconds ahead of Antonia Niedermaier in the overall standings. Van der Breggen, 36, had led since stage four and entered the 145km ninth stage around Saluzzo with a 49-second advantage over the 29-year-old Vollering.
Vollering rides for FDJ-Suez and was seeking to become only the second woman to complete the Grand Tour trilogy.
Antonia Niedermaier attacked with 80km remaining and formed a breakaway with Elisa Longo Borghini and Niamh Fisher-Black. Vollering then distanced Van der Breggen with 39km left on the Colletta di Brondello, the race's final climb, and joined the lead group 28km from the finish. Vollering did not contest the sprint and finished the stage three seconds behind winner Elisa Longo Borghini.
Longo Borghini, who had won the previous two Giros, edged Fisher-Black for her first stage victory of this year's race. Vollering completed the race in 29 hours 54 minutes 19 seconds. Niedermaier finished 30 seconds behind, and Van der Breggen placed third overall, 1 minute 37 seconds back.
"I gave it my all on the final climb - it was the time trial of my life," Vollering said. "I had to be ready to take risks, even if it meant losing everything. I did it, we did it. " Vollering added the Giro title to her La Vuelta Femenina victories in 2024 and 2025 and her 2023 Tour de France win.
She and Annemiek van Vleuten are the only female riders to have completed the Grand Tour trilogy.
