Wakatakakage captured the Emperor’s Cup at the just-completed Summer Grand Sumo Tournament while holding the komusubi rank. The victory marks only the 11th time since 1931 that a wrestler has won sumo’s premier prize at the fourth-highest named rank in the top division.
The top division lists five named ranks: yokozuna, ōzeki, sekiwake, komusubi and maegashira. Among these, komusubi has produced the fewest Emperor’s Cup winners. Wakatakakage’s success therefore stands out against more than nine decades of tournament results.
Received the Emperor’s Cup from Japan Sumo Association Chairman Hakkaku on Sunday at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. The presentation followed the final day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.
