Walmart and Amazon Expand Same-Day Delivery in Rural U.S. Areas
Walmart and Amazon are expanding delivery services to rural communities as populations grow and technology improves logistics. Walmart reports that 90% of U.S. residents live within 10 miles of a store, while Amazon has invested billions to reach smaller towns.

Rural counties recorded a 43% rise in median household income between 2010 and 2022, reaching nearly $60,000, according to McKinsey. U.S. Census Bureau reported that communities located up to 60 miles from major city centers have been among the fastest-growing places since the pandemic. Amazon invested $4 billion last year to bring same-day or next-day delivery to 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural communities. In a letter to shareholders last month, CEO Andy Jassy said the average monthly number of Amazon customers receiving same-day deliveries doubled in 2025 compared to the year before.
The company is opening small delivery stations and using artificial intelligence tools to forecast demand. Walmart is equipping its stores with robotic systems that pick and pack online orders. The automated system at a Supercenter in Bentonville, Arkansas, expanded the delivery radius from 10 miles to 30 miles.
Walmart also adopted a hexagonal mapping system that made same-day deliveries available to 12 million more households.
General extended same-day delivery to more than 17,000 of its 20,000 stores in January. CEO Todd Vasos told investment analysts in March that more than 80% of those orders arrived in an hour or less. Tractor Supply announced plans in January to add more than 150 delivery hubs this year, reaching over 15 million customers.
U.S. Postal Service are scaling back or slowing deliveries to some rural areas to cut costs.
