The main events carry the designation of national special security event, the highest level assigned by federal authorities. Tara McLeese, special agent in charge of the U.S.
Secret Service's Washington field office, said hundreds if not thousands of law enforcement professionals have planned the event for several months. President Trump will speak during the festivities around 9 p.m. on Saturday before the fireworks begin at 10:30 p.m.
Officials stated there are no specific, credible threats this weekend. Gadyaces S. Serralta, director of the U.S. Marshals Service, said he is staking his reputation on the readiness of the security operation.
Nearly 5,000 National Guard troops are stationed around miles of fencing in the capital. McLeese said the fences can be broken if a rapid evacuation is required. U.S. Coast Guard patrols will monitor boats and vessels along the waterways.
Attendees must pass airport-like screening and may bring one clear bag but no coolers or chairs. Cbs News will air "The Great American Block Party 250," a primetime special at 8 p.m. ET on July 4 hosted by Tony Dokoupil and Nischelle Turner, featuring live musical performances and the fireworks over the capital.
