Washington is preparing its largest and most complex security operation in recent years ahead of the July 4 America 250 anniversary events. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected in the capital during the coming weeks. The largest crowds are anticipated on July 4, when multiple events will occur simultaneously across the National Mall, including the Great American State Fair.
Security measures The annual fireworks display that evening has been designated a National Security Special Event by the Department of Homeland Security, the highest classification for federal security coordination. Visitors will face strict identification requirements, long lines, and magnetometer screening.
Snipers are expected to be deployed at some events. Flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport will be suspended from noon on July 4 until the following day. Other events involving flyovers or parachute jumps may cause additional flight disruptions.
Personnel and equipment Thousands of law enforcement officers and agents from multiple agencies will be joined by 5,000 National Guard troops. Military-style vehicles, armored SWAT vehicles, Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, communication vans, and FBI diving boats will be available for deployment.
