Washington Wizards edge Utah Jazz 92-88 as Peterson banks three at buzzer in Summer League opener

The Washington Wizards defeated the Utah Jazz 92-88 on July 10 in the opening night game of the 2026 NBA Summer League. The contest featured the top two selections from the 2026 NBA Draft, with AJ Dybantsa scoring 27 points for the Wizards and Darryn Peterson finishing with 24 for the Jazz.

Dybantsa, the Wizards' first-round pick, shot 7-of-18 from the field and missed all five of his three-point attempts.

Peterson, taken second overall, went 6-of-18. Both players committed turnovers early, including a Peterson giveaway on the game's first possession and Dybantsa's opening shot that struck the side of the backboard. The teams combined for 60 fouls, a rate of 1.5 fouls per minute in the shortened eight-minute-per-quarter format.

Peterson and Jazz forward Jamir Watkins each committed nine fouls. The NBA tested a new foul-shot rule that awards one free throw worth the full value of the infraction. Tre Johnson scored 18 points in the first half with zero assists.

Washington's Will Riley, a 2025 first-round pick, showed driving ability, while 2024 lottery pick Cody Williams fouled Dybantsa on a play that led to an acrobatic layup. Peterson banked in a three-pointer at the final buzzer. Dybantsa drew multiple fouls by initiating contact and using head snaps.

Peterson created space with dribble moves that left defenders off balance, including one that sent Watkins to the bench with an ankle injury.
