Waymo announced a deal with B2U Storage Solutions to repurpose spent robotaxi battery packs as grid storage for electricity networks in California and Texas. The company said the partnership will deploy hundreds of megawatts of storage capacity, though it provided no further details on timelines or locations.

Waymo has deployed thousands of robotaxis across the United States, almost all of them Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicles.

The company has also begun limited deployment of vans built by Chinese automaker Zeekr. The new arrangement addresses end-of-life handling for those vehicles once they are removed from service. B2U focuses on battery repurposing rather than recycling.

Redwood Materials, founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel and backed in part by Waymo’s parent company Alphabet, recently launched its own second-life storage business using retired EV batteries. TechCrunch reported the announcement on June 4, 2026.
