White House Asks Congress for $87.6 Billion After Congress Urges Limits on Iran Operations

The White House submitted a request to Congress on Wednesday for $87.6 billion in emergency appropriations to cover costs tied to recent military operations against Iran and additional domestic priorities. The largest portion, $67.15 billion, is allocated to the Defense Department for personnel, readiness, and replenishment of munitions and stocks used in the operations.

The Office of Management and Budget delivered the formal request hours after the president met privately with Republican senators. "I urge the Congress to take action on these important and urgent requests as soon as possible," Russ Vought said on June 24, 2026.

The secretary of state met leaders from Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates in Kuwait City on Wednesday and is scheduled to attend a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting in Bahrain on Thursday.

The secretary stated the United States would remain aligned with Gulf partners and committed to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open without tolls or fees. Technical talks between the United States and Iran are expected to resume in the coming days after an initial round held in Switzerland under Pakistani mediation, with a 60-day period set for reaching a longer-term agreement.

Qatar's prime minister traveled to Oman to begin separate discussions on Strait of Hormuz navigation involving Gulf states, Iraq, and Iran.
