White House Issues Alert on Medetomidine Mixed with Fentanyl in U.S. Drug Seizures

The Trump administration has released a health advisory warning about medetomidine, a potent sedative also known as rhino tranquilizer, appearing in U.S. drug supplies. Sara Carter, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, discussed the issue during an appearance on Fox News.

She stated that the administration partnered with the CDC to issue the alert, which was distributed nationwide to inform first responders and doctors. The advisory indicates that medetomidine is increasingly mixed with illicit fentanyl, a combination that Carter described as deadly.

According to the alert, the prevalence of medetomidine in drug seizures has grown since 2023, with detections primarily in the Northeast and Midwest. Carter wrote in the advisory that medetomidine poses a threat to communities and emphasized that the only safe level of illegal drug use is zero.

She added that the alert supports law enforcement efforts to address smuggling. In her discussion, Carter referenced the administration's strategy to target drug cartels through international partnerships. She noted operations including the removal of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and collaboration with Mexico to address cartel leader El Mencho.

These actions, according to Carter, aim to protect the Western Hemisphere from narco-terrorists. Carter stated that the administration will continue to target cartel financing and operations.

The advisory follows the administration's December 2025 designation of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals as weapons of mass destruction. This designation allows expanded use of intelligence and military resources against illicit substances. Carter described this as part of a broader effort to counter drug threats.
