White House Releases New Ballroom Renderings, Calls Project National Security Facility

The White House released new renderings of a planned ballroom attached to the complex. Officials described the project as a "Great National Security Facility and Ballroom" and said construction is moving on schedule. The images show a neoclassical-style building with columns and a formal facade.

Officials said the structure would sit above an underground facility that includes drone-proofing, bomb shelters, and blast-resistant materials.

Preservation filed a legal challenge arguing that demolition or alteration of parts of the East Wing requires congressional approval. A federal judge blocked some construction but allowed security-related work to continue. An appeals court later stayed the ruling, permitting ballroom construction to proceed while the case continues.

Officials have described the underground portion as extending about six stories deep and including a military hospital and research facilities. Plans also include bulletproof glass, hardened steel, and a rooftop drone system. Public documents show approximately $352 million originally allocated to the U.S. Secret Service was redirected to White House security measures.

Lawmakers from both parties have raised questions about whether the shift constitutes taxpayer funding for the project.
