Thune told reporters he has been in contact with White House officials and expects President Trump could soon name a permanent pick to lead the nation’s intelligence agencies.

Pulte, who also directs the Federal Housing Finance Agency, lacks significant national security or intelligence experience. Several senior Republicans have stated that Pulte does not meet the qualifications required by law for the DNI role.

Democrats blocked a motion Friday to extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expires Friday. They said they will not support the extension while Pulte serves as acting DNI. Democrats have accused Pulte of using access to private mortgage records to pursue allegations against political opponents.

Thune expressed hope that naming a longer-term nominee would satisfy Democrats and allow the surveillance measure to advance.
