A wildfire broke out near Draguignan in the Var region of southern France on Sunday and burned 10 homes while damaging nine others. Authorities evacuated 150 people from two towns and housed them in a community hall and a school. The fire first scorched around 60 hectares in Taradeau before jumping to Les Arcs-sur-Argens, where it torched a further 120 hectares in less than two hours.
By late Sunday the blaze had burned nearly 200 hectares and remained not fully under control, though officials described the situation as favourable. More than 600 firefighters backed by reinforcements from four neighbouring departments fought the fire with five Canadair water bombers, four helicopters and two Dash aircraft. One firefighter sustained minor injuries.
Roads into Les Arcs-sur-Argens were closed and rail traffic between Toulon and Les Arcs was suspended. Temperatures had exceeded 40C in parts of the Var region on Saturday, and an orange heatwave alert remained in effect for Monday.
