Wildfire in southern Spain kills 13 people, mostly foreign nationals

Euronews reported that twelve of the thirteen people killed in a wildfire in Spain's Andalusia region were foreign nationals. Officials identified seven victims from the United Kingdom, three from Belgium, one from France, one from the United States, and one Spanish citizen. The public body responsible for identifying the victims stated that the dead included eight women and five men, all adults.

The Integrated Data Centre reported that missing-person complaints have risen to ten after a new alert was filed for two people. Emergency services recovered twelve bodies so badly burned that DNA samples were required for identification. The fire broke out last Thursday in Almería province after an electrical cable fell on a road.

High winds spread the flames through forests and scrubland, destroying around seven square kilometres of land. The blaze has since been brought under control, and residents have been able to return to their homes since Sunday. In 2025 more than 393,000 hectares were destroyed by fire across Spain, according to the European Forest Fire Information System, the highest total in the country's recent history.
