Wildfire Sprinkler System Offers Insurance Discount in California
Frontline Wildfire Defense says its exterior sprinkler system protected 59 of 61 customer homes during last year’s Los Angeles fires. The company has partnered with Stand Insurance to offer up to a 25 percent premium discount for homes equipped with the system.
New York PostA wildfire defense company has introduced an exterior sprinkler system that automatically sprays a fine mist over a home when fire approaches. The system is designed to reduce ember ignition and heat exposure during wildfires. Frontline Wildfire Defense founder Harry Statter said 59 of 61 customer homes equipped with the system survived last year’s Los Angeles fires.
He added that several insurance companies have contacted the firm to explore possible coverage programs.
Frontline has partnered with San Francisco-based Stand Insurance. Homeowners who install the system can receive up to a 25 percent discount on their policies, the companies stated. The system costs between $15,000 and $30,000 for most properties. Healdsburg homeowner Greg Dexter, who installed the sprinklers on his roof and eaves, described the effect as similar to a car wash that extinguishes embers around the structure.
FAIR plan, the state’s insurer of last resort for high-risk properties, reported last year that it was running low on funds after paying claims from the Palisades and Eaton fires. Some policyholders face a 30 percent premium increase. Private insurers have indicated they may reduce coverage in the state unless rate increases are approved or additional mitigation measures are adopted.
Frontline’s website states the system is now being used in insurance assessments and is backed by the insurance industry.
