Wildfires burn over 15,400 hectares in Spain's Zaragoza and Guadalajara provinces

Two large wildfires continue to burn in Spain's Zaragoza and Guadalajara provinces, with neither fire under control and hundreds of residents evacuated. The Zaragoza fire began Wednesday as a small outbreak near Orés and has grown into the most destructive forest fire of 2026 on Spanish soil.

Preliminary estimates place the burned area at around 15,400 hectares with a perimeter of roughly 60 kilometres.

Current situation in Zaragoza Firefighters have stopped the fire at the edge of Luesia, preventing it from reaching the town centre. The active front is now advancing toward Biota, prompting new concern. Wind shifts continue to determine the fire's spread, as they have in Orés, Asín, Malpica de Arba, Uncastillo, and the Navarre town of Petilla de Aragón.

Norte, the fire has forced 529 residents from eleven municipalities to evacuate and has burned several thousand hectares. Crews are focusing efforts on protecting homes near Semillas. Roads in the area remain closed and Civil Protection continues issuing ES-Alert warnings to nearby residents.

Conditions affecting firefighting High temperatures, shifting winds, and steep terrain in parts of both provinces have complicated operations for ground crews and aircraft. Neither fire perimeter has been declared under control, and emergency services remain fully mobilized.
