The WNBA suspended Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas for one game after she made contact with her fist to Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark's throat. The contact occurred with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter of the Mercury's 111-109 victory on Wednesday night. No foul was called on the play at the time.
The league upgraded the contact to a Flagrant 2 foul, which carries a $1,000 fine. Thomas will miss the Mercury's game Saturday against the Toronto Tempo, a contest televised nationally on CBS. Fever president Kelly Krauskopf stated that player safety should be paramount and thanked the league for its review.
This is the first suspension of Thomas's career. She leads the WNBA with 8.4 assists per game. The Mercury hold a 6-13 record while the Fever stand at 10-8. The teams are scheduled to meet again on July 9.
