Woking Resident's Debt Reaches £26,000 After Heating Problems
A charity report shows average debt of £14,000 across the South East. One Woking resident's debt reached £26,000 after heating issues went unresolved.
bbc.co.ukA charity report states that people across the South East are on average in debt of £14,000. Christians Against Poverty works with local churches in the region and said it will typically take 10 years for someone to repay this level of debt. A Woking resident contacted the charity after heating issues that were not fixed.
The resident said the situation escalated over a 10-year period as bills rose, including a higher gas bill while trying to heat the home. The resident reported spending £100 a week on heating during cold periods and noted that a winter fuel payment was quickly used up.
When the resident approached the charity, the total debt stood at £26,000. The charity said this amount would normally take around 20 years to repay. It recommended a Debt Relief Order, which the resident accepted to reset finances and rebuild stability.
The resident is now managing budgeting carefully and has begun to regain control of finances. A government spokesperson said household incomes have risen 5% in real terms and around 100,000 fewer children are in deep material poverty. The government added that its Child Poverty Strategy aims to lift 550,000 children out of poverty in 2030 and that it is raising the National Living Wage along with the first sustained above-inflation increase to Universal Credit.
