citizen.co.zaWioletta Wyrwol underwent surgery on her right wrist in 2013. Shortly afterward her arm swelled, her fingers darkened and turned black, and she received a diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. CRPS is estimated to affect a few cases per 100,000 people each year.
She underwent more than 80 surgeries and countless treatments over the following years. In 2019 she elected to have her right forearm amputated. “It was one of the hardest decisions of my life, but also the only chance to move forward,” Wyrwol said.
She was later fitted with a prosthetic limb. Wyrwol said the adjustment was challenging both physically and emotionally. “My prosthetic arm helps me in daily life, but more it symbolizes resilience and the fact that I refused to give up,” she said.
She continues to live with CRPS and chronic pain. Wyrwol stated that she shares her experience to raise awareness about the condition and to challenge stereotypes about disability.
