An autopsy determined Gocaj died accidentally of scald burns with inhalational thermal injury and blunt force trauma of the torso, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Police sources said steam inside the manhole may have contributed to cardiac arrest. Gocaj was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Construction was underway at the site.
The manhole cover was found about 15 feet from the opening. Con Edison, which operates the manhole, said it reviewed video footage and determined a truck dislodged the cover. The utility stated it is actively investigating the incident. A representative with the New York City mayor's office said city agencies are working with Con Edison on the probe.
