Kyla Gillespie, who transitioned to male under the name Bryson before returning to living as female, said doctors did not explain potential emotional consequences of surgeries. She detailed a childhood realization of feeling different, years of alcoholism, a Christian recovery program that led to her transition, and a later encounter with God that prompted her to detransition.
nypost.comKyla Gillespie lived as a man for six years after transitioning socially, taking testosterone, changing her pronouns to he/him, adopting the name Bryson and undergoing various surgeries. Gillespie, who was born a biological female, told Fox News Digital she wished doctors had explained the in-depth parts of surgeries, that she would grieve unwanted body parts and that she would be emotional about it.
She said doctors told her transitioning surgeries would help her feel more complete and in line with the gender she believed she was, while communication about transitioning from doctors and some transgender friends was only positive and did not share the bad parts.
She added that she grieves body parts God created her with, including her chest. Gillespie’s sense of being different began at age five or six while playing hockey.
She grew up in an athletic house and a Christian home. At age 14 or 15 she realized she was attracted to the same sex while her friends were attracted to the opposite sex, the same period when her parents got divorced. By age 19 Gillespie took her first drink and blacked out.
She was an alcoholic for 11 years even while playing at the highest level of women’s hockey in Canada, owning her own business and teaching high-performance hockey. After 11 years as an alcoholic, Gillespie entered a Christian recovery facility. In the first six months of recovery she told everyone socially that she was going to transition, and she did.
New leadership later took over the ministry where she was, began sharing the Bible, hosting small groups and building friendships. About five and a half years into her full medical and hormonal transition, Gillespie shared her story with her pastor and his wife. She wrestled with Scripture for a year and a half.
Gillespie heard God ask her “Do you trust me? ” and she said yes. She has spent about nine years detransitioning. Doctors told her they had never walked with a patient who had been on testosterone, had the surgeries she had, and now wanted to go back to their sex at birth.
Gillespie is the founder of Renewed & Transformed, a ministry that focuses on Christian teachings related to faith, sexuality and identity. She is the author of the book “TransFormed” about her story of gender dysphoria, reassignment surgery, detransitioning back to female and her faith journey.
“The hope that I have in sharing my story and sharing my testimony is that people will hear that there are consequences for our choices, yet we serve a God of the impossible, and He is a God of reconciliation and restoration,” Gillespie said.
