Staff at Dartmoor Auctions in Sticklepath discovered a German M1914 rifle grenade among a batch of garden tools submitted for sale. Auctioneer Anne Thorpe consulted a military specialist and alerted authorities after identifying the unusual item.
M. yesterday and established a 100-metre precautionary cordon. The Royal Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team examined the device and determined it was safe to move in its current state.
Thorpe said the auction house has previously received live detonators and ammunition from wartime souvenirs brought back by service personnel. She described the incident as "quite an interesting day" after the century-old weapon prompted an emergency response. Specialists plan to transport the grenade for destruction at a secure location.
