X-Bow Systems Unveils Buckler Interceptor Claimed at Under $100,000 Per Unit

X-Bow Systems unveiled the Buckler, a surface-to-air missile interceptor with a unit cost of less than $100,000. @TheWarZoneWire reported that the system targets Group 3 drones weighing 56 to 1,320 pounds that fly up to 18,000 feet at speeds of 250 knots or less. It can also engage subsonic cruise missiles under certain conditions.

The company completed motor static-fire and igniter testing before conducting a successful flight test that demonstrated the Buckler's propulsion system and flight characteristics. @TheWarZoneWire reported that the Pentagon has requested a briefing on the interceptor. X-Bow Systems CEO Jason Hundley said the Buckler answers calls from the U.S.

And its allies for affordable capability at scale. He added that forces cannot win a war of attrition by trading million-dollar interceptors against thousand-dollar threats. The company produces its own solid-rocket motors, propellant, and airframe to control costs.

X-Bow Systems secured a $105 million investment from Lockheed Martin last year to expand production of propulsion systems. The Buckler enters a market that includes the Raytheon Coyote Block 2 at around $100,000 per unit and AeroVironment’s Freedom Eagle-1 at a target cost of $150,000 to $200,000.

The U.S. Army selected the Freedom Eagle-1 last year for defense against longer-range one-way attack drones. Current-generation Stinger missiles optimized against drones can cost up to $400,000, while the U.S. Army’s Enduring Shield fires AIM-9X Sidewinders priced around $500,000.
