X Updates Algorithm to Show More Posts From Mutual Followers

X modified its algorithm on July 13 to increase the visibility of posts from users' mutual followers, TechCrunch reported. Head of product Nikita Bier said the platform previously lacked data on mutual followers, which caused friends to appear less often in users' replies. Bier stated that the earlier setup turned the reply section into a space dominated by unrecognized accounts.

The update is intended to make the reply section feel more communal and to help clusters form around shared interests, he said. X has made several other adjustments this year aimed at creators. Earlier in 2026 the company altered its compensation rules to favor original posts over aggregation.

Earlier in July it added a video editor to simplify content production on the platform. The change comes after Meta's Threads reached 500 million monthly active users in June and introduced its own algorithm controls to build communities.
